Top 10 Songs for That Epic Roadtrip Playlist

Don’t Get Your “DJ” Title Revoked…

Everyone knows city life is more than just a lifestyle. It’s a contagious sensation that spreads like Usher lawsuits. You know you’re in trouble when you have wild thoughts like ‘Ahh the city… where the freshest air consist of good ole second hand smoke, food truck exhaust, and fresh urine’. You’re in even deeper ish when you realize you can’t go to sleep without those soothing sounds of ambulance sirens. Baby you’ve got Michael Jackson bad. One remedy that never fails to cure those widespread city-slicker symptoms is the good ole open road. Surround yourself with old friends, cool strangers, and a humble box of wine you had no idea you were going to enjoy so much. There are few risks that come with livin’ it up on the road. After tons of research, studies, and reading long dissertations I found the number 1 risk that has the ability to kill all the good vibes … awkward silence. I mean how many games of i-spy can you play? How many different license plates can you spot? It took a few decades for me to come to the conclusion that the quiet game is pretty lame. To prevent a roadtrip catastrophe like this from happening prep your aux cord for straight phiyah (fire). You’ll thank me later; So you’re welcome in advance.

You have one job! Don’t get your DJ title revoked, they’ll never trust your musical taste again. Do you wanna be the friend that killed the roadtrip vibes? I didn’t think so!

Let’s start them off with a track we all love so much, we don’t mind not knowing the words.

#10 “Bodak Yellow” — Cardi B:

You couldn’t f*ck with her if you wanted to. If you don’t love Cardi B you’re simply a hater and need to reevaluate life. The star that was once known for her hilarious yet all too real videos on instagram is now the star that her initial followers (me) knew she would be. This is what you call organic rap. The rap we miss so dearly. The real life lyrics will have you convinced you’re equipped to run around the streets of the Bronx being a regular shmegular everyday gangster. This’ll surely get you in the mood to be nothing but hype.

After the long talk you guys have about Cardi’s glow up you’ll still be able to admit how humble she is. So much so you want to send a message to the wanna-bes that lack humility…

There is no better song about humility than…

#9 “Humble” — Kendrick Lamar

On the road or off the road there is always time to tell a hater to have several seats. Kung Fu Kenny’s entire album had everybody like “Damn!” (No pun intended) Very much like Cardi, Kendrick will never forget who, what, and or where he comes from. Ketchup sandwiches with a nice cold cup of Kool-Aid on the side go great with this song. On second thought the real message behind K.Dot’s lyrics is to remember where you come from while you’re on your way to the TOP. So maybe leave the diabetes sandwiches for those who need a piece of humble pie (*GASP!* Yeah, I said it!) and get those truffle aioli fries you’ve been dreaming about.

#8 “Cranes in the Sky” — Solange

After waking up from a brief food fantasy session make sure you stay woke. You won’t want to miss Solange sing about what people of all colors go through: simple heartbreak. That desire to just be yourself again can be the toughest part of recuperating after a bad break up. Whether it be a friend, a family member, or a lame old f*ckboy, letting go is never easy. Thanks to Solange we get to sing it away while we ride it away, away, awayyy.

#7 “Me, Myself, and I” — Beyonce

You might as well get all the way in your bag at this point. The sulking both ends and begins with this timeless and legendary anthem. Talk about letting go! This is the part where you acknowledge who’s in your corner and get the strength to walk…no run in an expensive gown and diamond earrings just like this Queen Bey in the video. As the founder and CEO of the Beyhive I get asked all the time “Why is it that she never addresses the rumor or speaks about her relationship with Jay-Z?” I always reply “She does!” The majority of her songs speak for themselves, and instead of trying to enmesh yourself in someone else’s drama, try your best to take a few pages from her book. Nonetheless everyone can scream their lungs out while reminiscing on a time they didn’t think they’d survive after walking away.

# 6 “4:44” — Jay-Z

Speaking of those nosey folks, if you didn’t get a chance to hear Jay-Z’s latest album you’ll find all the answers you’ve been seeking. 4:44 is as heartfelt as it gets from the Bed-Stuy do or die guy. The public apology was way overdue for the public… oh and Beyonce too lol. If you didn’t love them before you gotta love them now for being so honest. Plus Jay-Z has been on hiatus from the music game so long (making heaps of money doing all the things outside of music,) these other young whipper snappers didn’t know what to do with themselves!

At this point you may or may have not gotten into multiple arguments with your male/female counterparts about gender, double standards, and non-existent modern day relationship. Lighten up the mood with..

#5 “That’s What I Like” — Bruno Mars

This Hawaiian hunk checks all the boxes, and has consistently delivered hit after hit since he dropped his debut single that made us all feel loved just the way we are. So let me give you a quick breakdown on Bruno Mars: Makes feel good classics? Check! Dashing good looks? Check! Has a voice of gold? Check! Knows how to pay homage to the greats (like MJ) while still keeping his sound and look young and fresh? Check! This’ll for sure shut most of the negative vibes out…after all, the trip is not over!

#4 “Rock My World” — Michael Jackson

Our lives will never be the same

’Cause Michael you came and changed

The way we walk..

The way we talk..

We cannot explain. *Belts out Michael Jackson is everlasting admiration* You thought you lost them didn’t you. But Michael has the ability to lift spirits instantly! Any and every MJ song is a classic. Fight me.

Plus we all know the words. #BestThrowbackEver

#3 “My Boo” — Usher ft Alicia Keys

First and foremost let’s all put down the pitchforks, and press pause on the stone-throwing for a minute #Leaveusheralone. Second, can we take a beat to reminisce about a moment that’ll always have our hearts: when this legend matched up with another legend (Alicia Keys) they made music-magic in its rawest form, and boom! “My Boo” was created. This was back when love was simple (or at least seemed like it…) one person put all their pride aside to wear their heart on their sleeves, and they all lived happily ever after in lalaland. Right?? This is the part where you compare old love to new love, and swap stories about your first boos.

To prove a very valid point you’ll need this next song…

#2 “Love Galore” — SZA ft Travis Scott

Did you think you I forgot about SZA? Never. This star has been a star! She’s written songs for some of our faves like Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna way before the rest of the world knew who she was. Her new album “Ctrl” is the talk of every town and is steadily creeping up Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Go Gina, go Gina! We’ve finally got a young singer/songwriter in touch with themselves. How refreshing! If you ask me it’s about time. This little songbird’s album is so relatable it’s kinda scary….like girl, did you read my diary?! Gain some insight on what it’s like to find love in 2017. Spoiler alert: #issastruggle.

#1 “Too Good” — Drake ft Rihanna

Remember that really awkward time in history when Drake was in love with Rihanna and she was totally pretending to be into him? Yeah I can’t seem to forget it either. So what they didn’t make it as a couple, they made great music together! But just imagine the music they would’ve made if Rihanna wasn’t faking it lol… Nonetheless this is another timeless tune symbolizing the struggle of contemporary love.

Look at that! In just 10 song you avoided death by awkward silence, had philosophical debates about gender roles, reminisced about first loves and simpler times, agreed more with a stranger than your actual friend, laughed, and cried (several times) all in one car ride. This is the part where you thank me.
