3 Alternate Ways to Improve Your Bench

It’s not always about the pecs

The lift of all lifts.

The bench press.

When guys begin lifting they gravitate to the bench.

They’ll be hyped up by their friends or have watched a few YouTube tutorials to get them ready.

Music goes on and it’s time to go.

Ego lifting is common — especially among inexperienced lifters who may not have the correct form.

In 5 of my 7 years of lifting weights, I viewed the bench press as solely about the chest, triceps and core.

It’s only in the last 2 years I’ve devoted myself to improving my bench by examining the movement and the body.

The bench press is a ‘pushing’ move — you use muscle groups to push to weight. These are the muscles being worked in the movement.

Thinking of lifts with this mindset not only improves your bench but all your big lifts.

With that in mind, I began to focus on the following three techniques for improving my bench.

These men and women are strong for a reason.

They know how to lift heavy. They move the weight a minimum distance with maximum force production.

This curving of the back is natural. Pulling the shoulders back and down (scapular retraction) protects your shoulders from experiencing excessive stress.
