My Experience with Creative Writing

Creative writing has revealed that writing is a production process where the writer tries to share their products and imaginations with us. Works of different authors focusing on the universe have been through reflection or mimesis. Literature demands going beyond mirroring; it represents the thinking of the contemporary period.

The works of African authors like Margaret Ogola, Biko Zulu, Ciku Kimani, Gasimba, Yolanda Mukagasana, Twagilimana and Chinua Achebe are impressive. Their use of language and incorporation of their personal life experience is lovely. Professor Gasimba, a Rwandan lecturer, has contributed significantly to the literature on Rwanda after the genocide experience through his works. He argues that survivors of the genocide can denounce the stereotypes of genocide through stories. Victims heal through these stories, and this is because writing offers therapy by allowing a troubled mind to speak. Yolanda Mukagasana is also a Rwandan writer who was an eye-witness to the genocide. She started writing during the genocide to keep sane as she kept a record of when her loved ones got killed. In her book, “Death does not want me”, she talks of serving the truth, leading to forgiveness no matter how bitter it is to avoid future genocide.

Classical books are exciting and primarily thrilled by the works of Shakespeare, Horace Aristotle. The latter talks of tragedy in a catchy manner. Aristotle says that tragedy reminds us that terrible things can occur to descent people, including ourselves. He argues that tragedy, like all poetry, is about imitation(mimesis). It aims to arouse sensational emotions of pity and fear, purging them to bring catharsis. Catharsis occurs after witnessing some disastrous of the protagonist and later offering relief. He believes that for tragedy to arouse pity and fear, the audience must observe a hero going from happiness to misery due to an error. We see it in the tormented figure of Oedipus, who realised that he had killed his father and married his mother.

The works of Horace in poetry are magnificent and lucid for everyone to understand. Some include; be patient, hymn to Diana, stop weeping and so on. He argues that a writer should be able to choose a proper subject within his power and say what needs to be said at any given moment. He equates poetry with painting. Words are like various colours that are put beautifully in a grand style. Words come and go like the leaves of a tree, and therefore the nature of words calls for proper usage to teach and give delight. Horace says that it is good to use the meter appropriately. For example, hexameter in epic, iambic pentameter in tragedy and hexameter and iambic meter in elegy. According to him, poetry is a valuable teaching tool for it is pleasurable. Its pleasures make it accessible and easy to learn.
