Chapter 11

I have never sat down to truly think about what the meaning of morality is. I had a vague idea but I’ve never considered what it means and how it affects a lot of the decisions made by people today. Morality is defined as the basis for differentiating between actions that are “good” or right and those that are “bad” or wrong when we are making choices among significant options. I am a Christian, so I use the Bible to develop a good sense of morality based on God’s principles. Even though this is the way I have chosen to live my life, I know that people have chosen to live in many different ways. I like to watch how other people do things and learn why it is that they think that way so morality is a great topic to discuss. I feel like people have their own ideals and values so everyone has a different set of morals. However, I also think that there are general morals that we share as a people such as murder being bad or things like that. I am excited to hear what others have to say about their morals and how they’ve come to live by them.

I think the censoring of a work of art is a little bit childish. People are allowed to produce any kind of art that they would like that has any kind of message. For someone to censor it, I would think that person has the maturity of a child if they cannot handle viewing a nude painting. Eduardo Manet’s Olympia is a great example of this. A critic wrote that the portrait was ugly and was of a “disgusting whore” and that it was “brazen and offensive to all decent-minded people.” For some reason this comment perturbed me. It’s a piece of art that someone put their time and effort into creating and put it out in the world to share, but because of someone’s immaturity people fail to see the beauty in it. I think the most offensive part was the woman being called a whore. Although the person knows nothing about her, she was assumed to be a whore for posing for the portrait. I cannot find myself to agree with this line of thinking. It demonstrates a very restrictive and conservative way of thinking, unfit for this day and age.

I heavily agree with this quote. Over the years so many religions have developed and even now there are still more religions being created. I am comfortable with the religion I am in but I also love learning about other people’s religion and how they view certain things. Everyone has different morals and if they are a part of a religion there morals probably stem from their teachings. Rather than getting into debates with others, I just like to listen to their point of view and see where we differ in opinions but also see how we are similar as well. In the many discussions I have had with other people I have been able to see just how similar some religions are. I can’t wait to learn more about my peers and understand how their minds work!
