Should the Tesla be more green than it actually is?

This past whatever time, I’ve been snooping through 2020 Midsize SUV data made available by greenercars.org, more specifically the Green Score. I’ve pointed out some nuances when considering using the Green Score, including size and weight of the vehicle and the size of the engine itself. I’ve concluded that the Ford Escape is probably the best overall vehicle in its class as far as eco-conscious vehicle purchases are concerned.

The data doesn’t stop at internal combustion based vehicles however, it too does classify and project a Green Score onto electric vehicles. To the left you’ll notice a scatter plot containing each Make and Model of the 2020 Midsize SUV. The green line signifies the best line of fit using a local regression (Loess).

Here’s where I lay into Tesla — and the I-Pace. If I were to exclude the electric vehicles from the local regression entirely… one would expect a combined MPG above 75, to be astronomically green. The electric car — in its relative infancy — should be relegated to its own category. There are problems in other vehicles that apply to the Tesla here.

The value of the Green Score is exhibited in not just accounting for gas mileage in greenness. It takes in other factors like weight of the vehicle or health cost per mile.

Am I looking into this too much? Probably not enough.
