Three Ideas I Learnt from the Book Range by David Epstein

What is The Truth?

With all of the reading I have been doing lately, I have really started to realize how easily someone can get wrapped up into a story they have told themselves.

We all have stories.

Literally. All of us.

We all see OUR stories as THE truth. But are they really THE truth?

When you enter into a conversation, you have your truths that you stick to and the person you are speaking with has their truths that they are sticking to.

We have all experienced heartbreak at different levels. We all have had someone tell us we weren’t good enough, whether intentional or unintentional.

But the feelings behind these instances are simply that. Feelings. We turn these feelings into our truths, and then apply them across situations that have nothing to do with them. Our brain works with these associations subconsciously and turns the outcome of the new situation into something it shouldn’t be.

We all want to be comfortable in our minds. This is why we let our subconscious minds take over 95–99% of our daily tasks.

What if we were to become conscious in just 2% more of what we do every day?

Would this change our truths?

Would allowing a situation to unfold instead of forcing our made up narratives onto it change the outcome for the better?

Are we consistently pulling ourselves back into our old ways because we believe we know the correct answers before the situation even exposes the question?

My answer is an undoubted, “yes.”

So how do we change this? How do we become more present?

You already have a good start by reading this… Now you know you do it. You are CONSCIOUS of the fact that you have the ability to manipulate situations subconsciously.

In order to become more present, we simply need to pay attention to where our thought processes go during a conversation/interaction/unfolding situation. DO they consistently go back to other situations ‘like this one?’

It’s time to change that. Every situation is completely independent of any before it. Those past situations may have lead to this one, but the only way they can impact them is in your mind.

Go be present. Go find the new truth.
