What I have learned writing for 4 months on Medium

I became familiar with medium following the crypto space as most news and updates were put on this website and heard that anyone could start their own blog here so why not me?

I write about the gaming space and how it will evolve within Web 3 taking more and more place in the future. I wanted to give a more realistic view on the merge between Web 3 and gaming as there are so many false claims out there, like “any team and project can make a metaverse”. It took more than $250 million dollar and 7 years just to make GTA V, so you’re favorite coin or crypto project has 99% chance to fail.

Going back to the topic of the article, 4 months ago when I released my first article, it didn't gain any traction(10 views at most)and I then stopped writing for a month. Suddenly the article just exploded and reached 3 thousand views in a couple of days. Since then I published more than 15 articles and would like to share the lesson I learned as a newbie writer and hope it could motivate a few to try it or to keep going.

The first lesson I learned is even if you think your articles are “bad” or “mediocre” they can still gain traction weeks later. Don’t lose motivation because you didn't do x amount of viewers on your first articles.

Even as a beginner writer you can get people to read your articles

My second lesson is don’t only write for yourself but also for others, what you are interested in probably doesn’t interest that many people in the beginning. In the end, we all want to write about what we love, but try to find a middle ground and also answer others’ questions within your niche. Because if you only write about what you love and you don’t get many views, you’ll get unmotivated pretty fast, but if you answer people’s questions from time to time you’ll get the necessary dopamine to keep writing.

For example, below is my most successful article so far, it didn't take me much time to write it, but people interested in cryptogaming would find it very useful, to have a simple top 5.

While the one below didn't get many views, I really enjoyed writing it, as I try to predict the disappearance of console gaming by giving realistic arguments.

My third lesson is simple and stupid but, just keep writing and try to increase the number of articles you are publishing each month. Medium has good metrics that you can check for yourself and volume matters. You will be a better writer publishing more for a few reasons:

Since I have started I released:

In 4 months of writing mostly about what I like, I gained more than 280 followers starting from zero, it’s not amazing but decent. As I’m not eligible for the partner program, I haven’t earned any money and I’m not that focused on earning at the moment, I just think it will come one day as I improve my writing and increase my audience.

What I earned though is:

If you are hesitating to start writing, there is no reason to hold back, just try it, most of the feedbacks I received are encouraging and I’m sure the feedbacks you will get will be as well. And If you are just in the beginning of your writing journey I hope this gives you the necessary motivation to not give up.
