Race to Mars

Upfront to be clear I am a fan of Elon Musk and his ability to think and execute on things which have never been thought of before.

Reusable rockets check, electric sports vehicle check, neuralink double-check.

So yeah, he’s pretty much awesome to be clear. But the conservative/ lazy part of my brain has a bone to pick with all the billionaires burning their money in the quest to conquer space. I am all for exploration, it is cool to discover new things and to expand the horizon.

But I do not agree with the fact that it is necessary to make humans a multi-planetary species. Many would call the endeavour futuristic. On the contrary, I find it pretty short-sighted. Before you judge me, hear me out one sec: To put into perspective it is good to ask these questions, was there a universe before humans ? Was there life before humans ? If god forbid something catastrophic happens to earth will there be a universe after everything is decimated here ? Will there be life in Universe once the earth is done with ? Hell yeah! it is just that we do not know when, where and in what form.

So let us not pretend that we are the last hope for humanity and that we can in any way give direction to the nature of life and how it exists in the universe and beyond. Things are much bigger than us, when we look at them on the astronomical scale. There is very much a possibility that in some corner of this universe or one of many others there is another human-sque species thinking that they need to go multi-planetary. So, I think the space to race is all about preserving what WE know, preserving life as WE know it. Not preserving life, as there might be in the universe. If we win it, we would not have saved life as such in the universe, we would have just extended ourselves to another planet. If we lose it, for the universe it will be similar to what we say in the tech world as un-regretted attrition.

And for the pessimistic ones, who say that there is no life elsewhere; I would throw a couple of books about the scale of multi-verses and elementary probability at you; hold them close.

Forces of nature/ space will always find a way to give birth to yet another life on yet another planet in yet another form or shape and evolution shall take care of the rest. In the absolutely worst case, there will only be a “life”-blip in the infinite space-time continuum, and we will be back up soon; just like a machine reboot.

So yeah, let’s explore. I love that spirit. But let’s not make a great deal of fuss about ourselves. The wise ones know that has already done us too much harm.
