Former Army Ranger Instructor Shared Wisdom

The wisdom gathered from experience can be beneficial to people from all walks of life.

Master Sergeant Smith, former Ranger instructor, shared some of his life lessons and perspective on what he learned from his experience being a Special Operations instructor.

Anyone who meets Smith will likely be deeply affected by the experience; the passion behind his words is moving, leaving you feeling as if you have to prove yourself to him.

To understand Smith’s career as an Army Ranger instructor, it is helpful to understand what Ranger school consists of.

The Army Ranger School started out in 1950 to train Airborne Rangers for the Korean War. After a year all Army combat units allowed soldiers the opportunity to get into the school. What many people do not know is that the Army Ranger school was open to all branches in the military.

Ranger School can be dissected into three phases. Phase one was the crawl phase, walk phase, and the run phase. Master Sergeant Smith explained that Younger people struggled with not the physical aspect, but the mental aspect. He stated that,“Being told there are not good enough is a emotional event for them, especially the officers who were privileged.”

Smith is a man who prides himself in “confidence and motivation.” He has trained countless Rangers who heeded the call to serve and holding them to the accountability he holds himself. One of the greatest drawbacks from that commitment is compassion. As an instructor, you become a mentor to the young and old students.

Smith stated, “Don’t take anything for granted, because tomorrow is not guaranteed.” After serving for an amount of time in a stressful environment and getting close to countless people as an individual, loss is inevitable. He strides to never take a day for granted because he knows that nothing in life is guaranteed.

Ranger School is designed to graduate students in the worst physical shape of their lives, requiring them to live on 2,200 calories a day and cover at least 200 miles of ground on foot while carrying 60 to 90 pounds. Every night the most they will ever sleep five hours, some nights none at all.

Although the school is hard it still does not produce the greatest leaders. Leaders, according to Smith share two essential qualities that reflect their abilities to lead: “Confidence, prove what you are talking about. Inspire those around by your work ethic. Do it yourself.”

It takes a certain type of person to heed the call to serve, and an even more special type to heed the call to educate those who are going to serve. It goes without saying that Master Sergeant Smith is a well respected man, and lives on now to pass down his knowledge and expertise to the younger generations, so that they can build a future and have a successful career in the military.
