Week 1 Blog

In our first Human-Robotics class, we got a good idea on what we’d be doing this semester. We watched the “I, Robot” scene with the robot Sonny. Sonny seemed to be sentient and could express or, in a robots case, simulate human emotions. A robot like this would be an amazing marvel of technology. It would be able to assist humans in basic tasks (i.e. household chores, taking care of kids, etc.), however, there is a fear that sentient robots, like Sonny, would plot to free themselves from their human overlord slavers and try to take over the world (I haven’t watched “I, Robot” in a long time but I’m pretty sure that was the robots’ motivation for turning on the humans).

We spent a while on discussing the possible future of robo-tech but we also saw examples of modern day robots, such as the Boston Dynamics robot who was able to jump and do flips. We also watched a blooper reel on modern day robots. These robots were less impressive than the Boston Dynamics robot but were still marvelous achievements of technology.

We also spent time learning about autonomous vehicles and the potential impact they might have on humans. Personally, I believe the rise of autonomous vehicles will lead to the death of many jobs. Transportation industry workers will be replaced by robots. While I believe that this will initially be a bad thing, this might also lead us to the first step in universal income seeing as around 40% of the workforce will need a different source of income.
