Hurricanes for Dummies!

It feels like all we have talked about for these past couple weeks have been hurricanes here in the US and for a good reason! Hurricane Harvey was the recent one that hit the US land and it took a devastating toll on Texas…

While our hearts and prayers are with the State of Texas and it’s residents during the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey; we found out about a stronger hurricane coming towards Florida…

This picture to the left is a satellite image of the brand new hurricane making it’s way towards the southeastern US coast, and the name it was given is Hurricane Irma…

A little research later I found out that the name Irma originates from German, and it means “WAR GODDESS”. After seeing the meaning for Irma; I got really curious about how the hurricanes are named…

I came to the conclusion that Hurricane Irma, took a random name out of the alphabetical order of names set for the Hurricanes each year…

I am a huge believer that names have energies and give characteristic properties to whatever object they are given to. Hurricane Irma proves my instinct right by being a Category 5 Hurricane with sustained winds of 185mph as of now… Word on the street is that meteorologists are considering adding a Category 6 to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale specifically for Hurricane Irma.

The scale to the left was developed by the director of the US National Hurricane Center in 1971. Civil engineer Herbert Saffir and meteorologist Robert Simpson developed the scale and with no surprise; they named it “Saffir–Simpson scale”.

The recent Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 Hurricane with sustained wind speed of 130mph, here is a picture to summarize the aftermath:

Miami Herald reported that; “Hurricane Andrew changed the very nature of the region.” Impact was catastrophic and even the Homestead Air Force Base was reported as “no longer existing.”

I grew up in Turkey and my knowledge about hurricanes was on a 3rd grade Geography lesson level until I was 18 years old. I only found out more about hurricanes and the impacts they have when I moved to Miami in 2008. When you live in a hurricane zone with hurricane seasons and serious hurricanes impacting thousands of lives and businesses almost every year; you have to learn more about them. This is why I decided to write this article to shed some light to the curious minds out there who don’t even know what a hurricane is…

The only topic we have been talking in Florida for these past 2 weeks have been hurricanes. I have received around 30 hurricane warnings from my buildings management and the service provider companies. Everyone I know has been wishing me and everybody out here to be safe…

Although natural disasters are not pleasant events to say the least; they are unavoidable and it puts a smile on my face to see how beautiful and strong we are as humans when we drop our differences and unite against a slap from the Mother Nature herself.

Although there is a really unfortunate natural disaster coming our way, you’d have to be here to feel the positive energy and the unity between the beautiful people of Florida days before Irma’s arrival. I am so humbled and lucky to have already been offered shelter away from Hurricane Irma’s way and only wish everyone who lives here gets the same chance… 🙏

We are currently contemplating with a close group of friends whether we should leave town tonight before Irma arrives, and we have been monitoring the hurricane projections every second for the past 24 hours. Even if we end up evacuating until Irma passes, we will be back soon enough to help cover and heal the wounds it will have on our beautiful City of Miami.

Without further due; I would like to wish everyone on Hurricane Irma’s way good luck and mercy from Mother Nature for this beautiful state and it’s beautiful residents.
