My Experience of visiting ghost village of Kuldhara

It was 10 AM when the car reached the gate of the deserted site. My journey had been exciting so far, but the opportunity of visiting a village claimed to be haunted had taken the adrenaline to a whole new level. I had been reading about the place for past 3 hours. Ghost tales have always lured me towards them with the unique charm that comes with them. They intrigue me with old forts, ruins of castles, deserted alleys, sinister houses and abandoned spirits. The place I was nearing, had a similar tale to tell…

The village was called Kuldhara. Ancient texts claimed that the place was an ancient village inhabited by the Paliwal Brahmins in the 13th century who had migrated from the region of Pali. They had build 85 villages around the place but abandoned the villages overnight under mysterious circumstances. The thing that makes this event so spine chilling is the fact that the entire population disappeared overnight without a single trace of what exactly happened to them, or where they went.

There are many unproven theories to explain why the village was abandoned, ranging from drought and earthquake. According to some legends, the evil eyes of Salim Singh, the powerful and debauched prime minister of the Jaisalmer, fell on the daughter of the village head and he desired to marry her by force. He threatened the village with grave consequences if they did not adhere to his wish. Instead of submitting to the order of the tyrant, the Paliwals held a council and people of 85 villages left their ancestral homes and vanished. But this was not all; before leaving, they put a curse on Kuldhara that no one will ever be able to settle in their village thereafter. To this date, the village remains barren; left almost the same as its inhabitants had left it centuries ago. It is also said that people who have tried to stay there at night have been chased away by strange paranormal phenomenon.

I reached the village and started to glance around. I must confess that it felt little eerie the moment I stepped out. There were several roofless houses, most of them entirely damaged. The village in general was very well planned, with a proper sewer system and step-wells placed at regular distances. Looking at the structures, the civilisation seemed to be advanced enough to figure out geometry and proper town planning.

Though I could not feel any ghostly presence there, strolling through the ruins still gave me a weird feeling of being alone and isolated. Despite the place being dry and dusty, the air felt chillingly cold and sorrow. There was a temple which is probably is not in use any more, and another street went from there parallel to the main street. As I walked alone surrounded by those crumbling walls, each step forward took me back to past, trying to fathom the lives of people gone centuries ago, people very similar to you and me and the fate they had met. The place had hit me with many zillion questions and an unexplainable gloom.

It’s implausible to believe the idea of how once life must have thrived here, people went through their usual daily chores, happy and contained, children who played around, laughed and ran in those courtyards. Kuldhara made me realize how powerful time is… How, once a prosperous thriving village comes to this state of ruins and how again from the ruins something else is reconstructed…
