Quality, authenticity and typicality of wines

The authenticity and typicality of wines is an important but challenging problem that may be addressed by accurately quantifying a wide variety of elements, beginning with the circumstances under which vines are grown and moving up to how wines are sold.

The term “authenticity” describes something, in this case, wine, that is genuine, clean, sober, original, that conforms with the truth, and whose reality cannot be doubted. Authenticity can also mean being authentic, simple, clean, heavy, and original.

In contrast to the concept of authenticity, typicality relates to anything that may differentiate and characterize an item that is special to a particular entity and has characteristics that individualize, distinguish, and particularize. Consequently, wines are considered legitimate if they are pure, unaltered, the first of their kind, and genuine and if they comply with the accompanying inscriptions. Unique wines, wines typical of a given winemaking technique, wines unique to a particular wine-growing region, wines made from a specific type of vine, etc., are considered distinctive wines.

All of the experimental and sensory techniques that, through the statistical processing of the resulting data, confirm or refute the “inscriptions” that accompany a particular wine are considered to be the methods for determining the authenticity and typicality of wines. These techniques are collectively referred to as “authentication methods.” Wine is an intricate concoction that contains both organic and inorganic ingredients. The components of this combination are affected by a wide variety of various variables.

They begin in the vineyard and continue through the fermentation process in the winery and the post-fermentation phase. These factors are linked to the oenological environment, which includes the soil, climate, and variety of vines from which the wine is made, right through to the oenological practices used.

All of these define and express these influences in a particular way, in what we call the authenticity and typicality of the wines. Authenticity and typicality are two terms that are often used interchangeably. Local varieties have exhibited new virtues in the current climate and soil circumstances.
