Should teenagers drink Energy Drinks?

An issue that is hotly debated, is the consumption of Energy drinks. This essay clarifies why teenagers should not drink Energy drinks. Energy drinks are popular among young adults and teenagers. They are a type of drink containing stimulant ingredients, such as caffeine, niacin, and sugar. They are widely promoted as products that enhance mental awareness, increases energy and physical performance. Energy drinks, next to multivitamins, are the most popular dietary supplement for American teenagers and young adults. People between the ages of 18 and 34 years consume the most energy drinks, and almost one-third of teens between 12 and 17 years drink them regularly.

Even though some athletes consume energy drinks to enhance athletic performance or some students drink them to burn the midnight oil, they have negative effects on your body. Thus, it is clear overall that teenagers should not drink energy drinks. The reason behind this is that the consumption of energy drinks can lead to a serious impact on everyday life, addiction, and life-threatening illness.

The reason that energy drinks can lead to a serious impact on everyday life, is that they contain a lot of Caffeine and Sugar. While this sugar in combination with the caffeine will increase your blood sugar levels and give you an initial energy burst and increase your alertness, with high doses these effects may become more pronounced, leading to anxiety and nervousness. In fact, caffeine-induced anxiety disorder is one of four caffeine-related syndromes listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which is published by the American Psychiatric Association. Furthermore, while caffeine’s ability to help people stay awake is one of its most prized qualities, too much caffeine can make it difficult to get enough restorative sleep and lead to insomnia. For this reason, drinking too many energy drinks could interfere with your job or schoolwork. Furthermore, since teenagers are going through puberty, it would be unwise to drink energy drinks as it would interfere will the growth.

Another reason is that energy drinks could lead to addiction and life-threatening illnesses. By drinking energy drinks daily, it may lead to psychological or physical dependence on the drink. In one study, 16 people who typically consumed high, moderate or no caffeine took part in a word test after going without caffeine overnight. Only high caffeine users showed a bias for caffeine-related words and had strong caffeine cravings. In addition, consuming energy drinks elevates blood pressure as there are niacin, caffeine, sugar, and other components. Elevated blood pressure is a risk factor for heart attack and stroke because it may damage arteries over time, restricting the flow of blood to your heart and brain. High intake has also been shown to raise blood pressure during exercise in healthy people, as well as in those with mildly elevated blood pressure.

Some other teenagers may think that it is good to drink energy drinks, as it improves athletic performance. However, evidence shows that Energy drinks dehydrate you giving you less energy to workout. Research shows that drinks that are high in blood sugar can lead to dehydration. When there’s extra sugar in your blood, you urinate more. A large amount of water goes out with that urine, causing your body to dry out. Thus, energy drinks are not good for sports activities or lessons.

Although there are positive effects on consuming energy drinks, there are more negative effects than positive ones. In conclusion, teenagers should not drink energy drinks.
